I started using an Air 2 right out of open water and I love it. Not as awkward to use as some feel they are. One would be lead to believe that for the purpose of instructing and Octo would be required. Although, you could simple install the octo when teaching a class. Or as others have stated you can never have too many air sources. On the other hand one more reg attached to the first stage leaves one more possibilty for a free flowing reg failure.

I use my Air 2 on a reglar basis when I dive just to stay comfortable with it. If someone is out of air, communication will be evident, large eyes and the swiftness at which they come at you is generally a good indication. They will more than likely go for your primary anyway.

Also if an out of air situation exist and it is your buddy or you and niether of you has had an equipment failure, then you have already ignored everything they tried to teach you in OW. If you are that concerned with the awkwardness of an octo/ inflator then you have probably answered your own question.

I would not suggest ever going for the octo inflator of another diver if YOU need air. Simply pluck the reg from thier mouth. If a diver is using an oct/inflator this is what he will prefer and expect. This will also eliminate the possibility of you blowing the air in their BCD or fully inflating it unintentionaly.

Hope this helps
