I think as with any other place where you stay / what you do is going to affect your experience. I also know a friend of a friend who went to St lucia and thought it was dirty/had rats, ... (went to a sandals) but the I was at was very clean and super nice. We went to lunch with another couple who said they liked st lucia better than hawaii (and said there were definite similarities between the two places), so again hit or miss.

It is a poor island however, so a lot of the towns are not all that nice (go to tripadvisor.com to find all you'd ever want to know).

We did a couple little excursions, and visiting the botanical gardens and what not by soufriere was the best one. We also went to pidgeon island which was cool, but far away and requires crossing a bit of choppy sea (take the raincoat if they offer you one, assuming you don't just take a cab). And yeah, the driving there is kind of crazy. On the way to our place it was fine, but the way back was a little hair-raising/motion sick inducing (depends on the cabbie I suppose). Kind of wish we'd of done the whale watching. Glad we didn't do much shopping / spend much time in castries or rodney bay.

I'd still love to go to hawaii at some point though .

Edit: just wanted to note, hope that didn't imply that sandals is dirty/ratty; I've heard a lot of nice things about that place and their all-inclusives include dives which is pretty cool.
