The only thing I know is the horror stories about overseas travel. All kinds of things missing and I've heard many horror stories of items stolen. Myself, I'd still take a knife but I'd take my ultra cheapy so that if it got stolen I would only be out $3.95.

i know that is what worries me about missing gear. i am trying to cram most of my dive stuff into a carry on , really all i need is swim trunks and t shirts. but they don't allow knives on planes so i have to check something
