If you need the extra weight, I think it's definitely worth it. I got a pair for my Long pattern steel plate and they work just as advertised. When I'm wearing my 7mm farmer john or my drysuit, the plates add the extra weight that I need without having to put a weight belt on (I hate weight belts).
If it would be too much weight or you don't mind a weight belt, perhaps you can live without. For me, it just works.
