We have the DC600 and are very happy with it, the key is that you have to have enough light for it to focus and (a) strobe(s) is/are necessary if you are going dark and or deep. It has nice features like being able to view the histogram live, and the enclosure is perfectly shaped for the camera.
Expecting any camera to take excellent pictures at 100' with no external flash is unrealistic. As for manual settings, I want to shoot and move, if I spend $75 on a charter and get a picture of 1 fish per dive and it's a superb picture, I feel like I wasted $$. I shoot and go to the next place and see lots, but that's just me. I could never be patient enough at this point in my life to sit there and adjust settings until it's just perfect.
I'm a fan of point, focus, shoot, done.
