I've lost a number of TSA locks and somewhat prefer zip ties. The lock is more convenient for me. But if they cut off a tie they seem to replace it with a tie. When they've cut off one of my TSA locks they never replace it with anything, or return the lock so I could get a replacement.

I don't think they are more or less likely to search a bag based on how it's closed. I do think having something to keep a zipper closed and make your bag a little more trouble to get into than the next guys is a good idea. But I'm not sure a dinky little lock which can be broken pretty easily, and to which I'm sure the keys are available anyway, is much more protection than a zip tie.
