I prefer stones, I have various grits I use depending on the knifes condition.
I sharpen any knife I have so that I could shave with it if needed. Comes from deer hunting when I wanted a knife that I could actually do work with. I'd suggest learning how to do it the old way with stones because it's cheap and creates a very sharp edge.
The disclaimer is that not all knives are created equal and depending on steel you can not make it super sharp. Not for long anyhow.
