I wore a 3 mm full suit in the Carribean and it wasn't too hot or too cold. But its probably going to depend more on how you react to the water and what the temperature of the water is. A full suit offers more protection from the elements than a shortie does. You might even want to consider renting for your first dives, that way you will know what your are the most comfortable with.
