There shouldn't be any problem with converting your yoke first stage to DIN in the future. No difference in performance. The first and second stages should function equally well with either attachment fitting. AFAIK, the newly converted DIN reg should be identical to one that was initially DIN-configured.

FWIW, I don't think you should be in any rush to convert your reg to DIN. It really only makes sense if you plan to be using DIN-valve tanks. Many newer HP steel tanks (and also AL tanks) now come with a convertible DIN/yoke tank valve that will work nicely with either a DIN or yoke-style reg.

After you convert to DIN, you may encounter a situation in which you must use a yoke-valve tank. That's when you'll whip out your handy-dandy DIN-to-yoke adapter. This adapter is what might make the first stage bump up against the back of your head. Since I own DIN tanks and use them for all of my local diving, I only run into this situation when I go on a dive vacation.

I prefer the DIN attachment over the yoke because I feel that it's more secure. Nevertheless, in my experience, both styles of connection have proven to be reliable.

Hope this info helps...
