Best way to sharpen your dive knife

I have an older knife that needs a new edge. I have plenty of hunting knives, but does the coating on dive knives need any type of special attention?

Thanks in advance.

I suppose it would depend on what your knife is made of? Stainless and Titanium knives would be fine, I would think.

I sharpen mine on the same wetstone that I use for kitchen knives. Most dive knife blades have a high chromium content and do not hold a good edge (unlike high carbon steel). I usually go for a blunter edge, as opposed by the fine edge that I put on kitchen/carving knives.

"Coating"? What kind of coating would your knife have? Most knives I seen or either solid stainless steel or solid titanium. If yours is titanium good luck sharpening it. That stuff is hard. Even a stainless steel knife will take quite a bit of effort with a stone.

Some people do coat their dive knife with a light coat of silicone (the same kind as used on o-rings) to prevent rust. I don't think this helps. but if yours hs this just wipe it off.

You can also try using a diamond coated whetstone, which may give you a better edge.

I tried that and couldn't get it to work worth #$%&. I still use the stones it came with, just do it by hand.

That sucks, it works great for me and I've had mine for several years. Some knives don't clamp in well but I can usually get it to work. I screwed mine down to my work bench to keep it solid. maybe thats the difference.

I prefer stones, I have various grits I use depending on the knifes condition.

I sharpen any knife I have so that I could shave with it if needed. Comes from deer hunting when I wanted a knife that I could actually do work with. I'd suggest learning how to do it the old way with stones because it's cheap and creates a very sharp edge.

The disclaimer is that not all knives are created equal and depending on steel you can not make it super sharp. Not for long anyhow.
