How big of a Knife do you really need?

They have all different sizes of dive knifes, but what size is the most practical?

The general rule of thumb is your knife should be about 1/2 as long as the shark or giant squid you plan to fight with it.

I always get a kick out of the folks with the giant serated knives strapped on the thigh.

A 3" BC knife should get you through anything you'll ever need it for. I prefer a blunt tip to make sure I don't accidently stab my BC or myself

You don't need a large knife at all. Most small blades work just fine for diving. And cheap knives aren't a bad way to go either since if you end up losing it, you won't be too upset with the financial loss.

I have a large knife that I got when I first started diving. Now it sits on the shelf collecting dust. I have a small knife on each BP/W set up we have.

Most practical for what? Are your probling and prying? Just for cutaway emergencies? Planning on taking on frog men, or what?

JAPANESE SWORDS<BR>WARRIOR SERIES

I recommend the Nodachi (never submerge without it), but any of the dive knives listed on the attached page should be more than sufficient for most recreational diving (IMHO).

Now, would you be attaching that to your calf, forearm, or BC?

You clip it to a partially inflated safety sausage, and let it float along behind you.

This is my favorite knife - 7 3/4" blade. People on dive boats think I am probably half-a-bubble-off-center, and tend to move away from me, leaving me lots of room to gear up. - DRg

For spearfishing you will need a sharp point that is long enough to handle whatever you are hunting. A stiletto point is best. For other types of diving ----- well, I don't really know what other types of diving exist.
