All the previous times, my car's key didn't have that little chip that the car recognizes. So I took the key off the ring, left everything else in the car, and took the key with me. (I dive in a 7mm wetsuit). I've changed cars since then. Next year though, when I start diving again, I'll probably get a backup key made, and leave my keys in the car and again, take the backup key with me into the water.

I take the key off the ring with the remote. Put the key on a snap ring and snap it to my BCD D-ring. I lock the car with the key and snap it onto the BCD. When I get out of the water I take off the key and unlock the car.
I do only shore dives around here and drive my car to the site. It is a down-hill walk from the car in shifting sand and rock to the shore. Leaving dive gear laying around on the shore is not a good idea most of the time because the dive site is also a busy shore swimming site. You never know who is there or what they might decide to walk off with so every thing is kept in the car and locked. I do have a spare key inside the car just in case I ever lose my key. I would have to break a window but much better than being stranded. My key does not have a chip that is visible on the key. There is one inside the key but not where it can get wet from what I can see. So far no problems after several dives but all in fw so that makes a difference. |
