How do you dry out spools and reels?

1. Rinse and hang up. (would take a long time for the line to completely dry out)

OR

2. Actually unroll all the line and lay it out so that the line dries out overnight.

Oh great ST Forum....what say ye??

Rinse and hang. If I have used a lot of the length during a dive, I will unspool it and rewrap it nice and tight again.

#1. Rinse and hang.

My goal is to dive often enough that the spool never dries out :-)

+1.

No need to unwind unless you dragged the line through some dirty materials and need to clean it.

Periodic checks for line integrity are not a bad idea, but certainly not needed on every dive (generally).

after the first few dives with mine I laid all the line out to let it dry. Then I figured that was so much of a pain that there is no way everyone else it doing it like that, so I started just rinsing them all wound up and then hung it up with the rest of my gear and have never had a problem with them.

So like everyone else has said. Just rinse and hang.

I rinse and hang dry my reels and use a little reel magic on them every now and then.

It was a natural progression from using it on my fishing reels and gear to my diving reels and gear.
I even use it on folding knives and shears. It prevents rust very well.

Sounds like we have a consensus. Thanks for the input folks.

I'm a rinse and hang guy from now on...

Rinse and dry. I only unroll if I ran a lot of line and it didn't get wound back up nice and tight.

When you get a new reel or spool, it is always a good idea to unspool the line to make sure that the end of the line is actually connected to the reel/spool. Nothing worse than holding an empty reel in your hand with no line attached to it.

One time I decided to unspool my spool in my garage to inspect it and let the line dry, and maybe tie off some knots. I ran the line around my car, tied it off at the side view mirrors and then ran it around my wife's car, around my work bench, back around the car, etc, intending to reel it up in an hour or so.

Only problem was that I forgot to take it all down, so when my wife was leaving for week, she found a giant spider-web of line blocking her entrance to the car. LOL. She thought I was playing some cruel joke on her.

LMAO!

Been there, done that. Re-spooling spools in the living room is always fun, too. The wife is NOT amused by these incidents. LOL
