My solution, however, was a canister light with a goodman handle, which allows me to use both hands on the camera. Much better than fumbling with my old light cannon. ![]() A mini-Q40 is nowhere near enough light for our dark SoCal waters, outside of an emergency. |

i use the oxycheq light sock with an intova when i'm somewhere tropical and night diving...which was ok, but still awkward at times when i was fumbling with my camera.... or venting my BC....i had to be careful where i shined my light so i'm not blinding other people....maybe it's just a matter of practice.
do you generally vent the bc with your right when you have to goodman light? its these little technical things that i havent figured out yet |

When I'm being more careful, however, proper technique is to pass the light to your other hand, holding it oriented forward (as normal) with a temporary hold, or better yet, a thumb loop. Use your left hand to adjust buoyancy as usual, and pass the light back. Considering buoyancy adjustments only take a moment, it's generally not a problem and there's no conflict with photography, unless an amazing critter pops up just as you're otherwise occupied, but such is life. ![]() |

so when you have a camera, you pass goodman handle to the same hand and hold both at once? |

Yes, all I use is a small focus light ( Fisheye Mini LED Focus Light [fix.mini.light] - $49.00 : Reef Photo & Video!, The Underwater Photo Pros) for my primary on night dives. I carry a larger (Dorsey) light for back up and emergencies.
Yes it is...........
