Dive Knife Points

What are the relative advantages and disadvantages of a drop point or a blunt point to a dive knife? How do you know which one you really need?

Thanks for the help!

I have yet to find a use for a blunt/tanto tip knife. They are good for nothing in my opinion. They seem to be the safety-scissors of knives. If you want a knife get a nice pointy one. If you're scared of sticking yourself then get shears. Heck get both. I'm partial to Riffe.

I've had both. I actually have yet to have a real need for any knife, but since I'm not planning on stabbing any sharks a blunt tip makes a lot more sense to me. (If I fished maybe it would be different.) Can't accidentally stab someone or something like my BC that way either. And if you ever use your knife to pry something, you'll probably turn a pointy knife into a blunt tip anyway.

I do a lot of prying so I prefer blunts but carry a sharp stiletto type blade when spearfishing. It is always good to have a razor sharp knife for cutting something serious so I keep a real sharp or serrated knife on my harness waisband and a heavy duty blunt for prying on a leg

I've used a blunt tip a lot more for prying than I ever did a sharp point for poking.. The biggest feature I've used on a knife so far is the line cutter.

I have a pointed double edge knife on my left forearm for spearfishing. I only use the point for gutting fish. I de-gill fish rather than braining so that they bleed out fast, so a pointed knife is not really required. I also carry a fish scaler to clean Rockfish. I carry an Ab iron if I need to pry or scrape.

When on SCUBA, I also have a blunt knife attached to the end of my HP hose. It is against the law to use it for prying most mulluscs off rocks.

I prefer a blunt tip on my primary knife because it's sometimes used to pry things. Also it's safer when making a PB&J sandwich on a rolling boat.

If you're hunting, and using your knife to dispatch the fish, a sharp pointy knife is recommended.

Blunt tips are safer for you and for those around you, and they're stronger and more useful for prying.

Unless you're a hunter (see first sentence above), I'd recommend a blunt tip.

I admit I have cut myself a few times underwater and just recently took a slice out of my knuckle that bled on and off for a couple of days but the cut was made by a serrated knife and I was in 0 viz. I pushed the knife blade into a clay bank while working and reached for it a while later and cut my knuckle. But I suspect I am not endangering myself or buddies by having a sharp point knife. Hell I still have my boy Scout Tote 'N' Chip card. It is more about prying on things that make a blunt tip so handy. I use it to pry on most dives, usually prying out lead sinkers from rock crevices or on anchors that are stuck in the rocks, etc. As a matter of fact I often dive with a small crowbar for those types of dives.
