Just received a watch today U.S. priority Mail from someone selling display models etc (may have a rub mark on it before you dive with it lol...

It's hard to get them to sync with the Fort Collins, Colorado atomic clock. I'm trying again as I type & will turn off the nightly sync after the initial setting as it fails too often this far away...My son has had one over a year & loves his...This watch is big on the wrist & pretty heavy...Luck of the draw on scuff marks...$40 for tax shipping & to the door for a dive watch...Very convenient....

It's very interesting the atomic sync this far away. It will not work inside dept. stores in florida (at least south florida)& usually all of these watches read the wrong time on sale in stores. The clerks often have no clue as to why they don't reset correctly at night...They then fail to sell at reg. price & go on clearance sale a lot...lol. Mine would not sync during the day in S.Fl. I tried 4 times...It just sync'ed now that it's night in the open yard ....I guess less solar magnetic interference at night etc. etc.. Just rubbed one spot & it was not scuffed/blemished...Now looks new...

Is your model 100m or 200m? All three g-shocks I have had say 200m water resistant on them. Most reviews recommend 200m as the minimum for scuba diving.

I agree about g-shocks being fine for diving. I have had 2 of my g-shocks on several dives in the 70-100 foot range, and they have gone great.

I got one of them for $69 on sale at Walmart - can't get a dive watch much cheaper than that. I also have a solar, atomic clock signal g-shock that I paid $99 for.
Oops, my bad...my casio solar g-shock says water resistant to 20 bar. (200m/600'+)

I used a 50m casio for about 10 years before I destroyed the case-never leaked on any dive.
Now's the time to pick up a replacement model.....Mine looked new...Not a lot more than the band price after searching for a match, etc. etc.(also the rechargeable batteries are costly if they ever need to be replaced)

I had a $20 Lorus that was supposed to be water resistant to 30 meters; it didn't even survive the pool at Scuba Toys when I left it on by mistake.

In most of the literature that I have seen about (or accompanying) these watches, the manufacturers say "50m": ok for hand washing/showering;"100m" ok for swimming, but not to "scuba depths" and "200m" ok for scuba".

As I understand it, the "depth ratings" for watches refers to pressure as0 a "static pressure" (the watch on a line lowered to that depth, or in a pressure chamber)-no extra pressure caused by wrist movement (e.g. lifting the wrist/arm through the water to look at the watch),impacts or the like.
That said, I have used a variety of G-shock (200m) watches on dives without any problems.

Re: G-Shock in FL not syncronizing with Atomic Clock.

Food for thought:
-The Atomic clock signal is broadcaast from Ft. Collins Colorado at a frequency of 60 KHz.
-The wavelength of a 60 KHz carrier is just a little over 3 miles.
- How efficient of an antenna do you think they can squeeze into a wrist watch?
- Even with a "real" antenna, mounted on a rooftop, WWVB coverage in FL is spotty.
- The published coverage maps show that the signal does not reach FL for most of the daylight hours. Signals > -67dBm are only predicted for about 8 hrs per day.

NIST Radio Station WWVB

P.S. My dive watch is a reactor - Critical Mass, rated at 200m

I've used 100m watches with no problems and then also had them leak in 50 feet. if you've got an o-ring in the watch that is bad/old, it's gonna leak eventually. it just happens.

The watch I wear every day is rated to 1000ft/300m. but of course I've never dove that deep. (only a handful have).

They make watches that are rated for 1,000meters and deeper. (and have been tested to that actual depth with submersibles. )

Check out ISO Standard 6425. It has a lot of neat information about Dive watch depth standards.

as a note, 6425 requires watched be tested to 25% beyond their certified depth rating.

ISO 2281 is the ISO Standard for "Water resistant" on watches.

I have been using a very cheap 100 mtr watch for rec diving. It's 2 yrs old. I usually dive 100 to 200 dives per year, plus pool work with students and I have never had a problem. It is used as a back up to 2 computers or to hand off to others that forget a timepiece.

If this were to be your only timepiece spend the money on something rated for 200m otherwise 100 should be ok, Knowi that it might fail after repeated use.
