It's a loop of elastic cord running through a golfball sized plastic ball. You put the elastic loop around your tank, and then you can pull on and release the ball to make it bang against your tank, making a loud "clang" that alerts everyone in the water with you that you're a newbie who'll buy anything that's put in front of you.

In other words, tank bangers are obnoxious and IMHO a waste of money.

I agree, it is not something you really need. They are cheap though.

Correction: It indicates that you are a newb, who is too cheap to buy an air powered sub duck

Nothing is better than being on a dive and being stalked by the mysterious banger fish and shaker fish.

I had a nice little clip that I can use for getting someone's attention. I can't ever remember to clip it on.

It's an underwater air horn that connects to your lp inflator hose. It let's you make a loud but sickly honk/quack noise at the push of a button. It's even better than a banger for bothering other divers, and more expensive.

The Sub Duck is a god awful thing that attaches inline with your power inflater/hose. It quacks really loud underwater.

I use a carabiner clipped to D-ring. If you have fumble fingers, attach a safety piece of monofilament or nylon.
I find a little metallic clinking far less intrusive than a horn ;-)
