I know a lot of people that just carry the shears. You can also get away with carryingthem a lot of places you can't carry a knife. I also know a few people that carry both. I won'tfault someone for safety but I choose to just carry a knife. I think the shears might be quicker at cutting lines but I think a knife has a few more uses.

shears are fine- i actually carry a z-knife and a regular knife instead, but on occasion I'll carry the shears in a pocket- if i know we're cleaning the lake or something, i'll bring the shears for snipping line.

I gotta say that redundancy is king, especially when it come to bottleneck equipment. (If this particular piece fails, everything in your life stops until it is fixed. Hence OOA strategies.) If your light goes out, your dive is hampered (cave/wreck/night dives excepted), but if you get tangled, and drop your shears trying to free yourself, without a backup, you are stuck. I've dropped tools (especially right after I say to myself: Don't drop it!!), sometimes it just happens.

Someone should write a Dress for Success book for dork diving. This guy has all the proper equipment: Air2, redundent snorkels, plastic shovel, and everything is secured with suicide clips or retractors.

I'm guessing the twin 12" thigh sheath knives are below the crop line

you better believe he is rolling with a fatty pig stickler on his leg. Probably one on each leg in case he has to fend off two sharks at once! Is that an orange shovel or a spatula for cooking lunch after the dive???
