Billions of internal combustion motors pumping poison into the air on a daily basis....Paper mills down here cooling boilers and digesters with river water and pumping it back in....Cigarettes burning global constantly ...Personaly I worry more about there being no sewage control system in the Florida Keys and the effects it is having on the reefs than I do my little shot pouches. And I've never seen a shot pouch damage the gel coat in the bottom of a boat. Ahhh call me a jerk but I'll take the leaching anyday

Do you use paper? In any form....Copy, toilet, towels or plates? Again, will you resolve yourself to stop using these products as well? Do you use plastics or purchase products packaged in plastics? Will there be a resolve to discontinue these product in your life style? Carpet, the foam used in your furniture, the wood in your home? Tires on that huff mobile you drive? Again do any of these products sound familiar? Ever giving thought to he manufacturing processes? Or how long 90% of these products take to decompose once they have served your comforts and are disposed of? I'll agree that with Global Glaciers receeding, and Polar Caps melting at an alarming rate, something must be done if we intend on implementing any form of "Damage Control" on mother earth. However, there are much better places to start than with a metalic ore used a couple times a week if were lucky. When folks dramaticly alter their daily routines and products they use, then, and only then will the hand around the earths throat loosen and give "her" some much needed air.

I don't think they are trying to say that they are perfect when it comes to helping the environment. They are just saying that something as simple as using coated lead is one thing they can do. When it comes to helping the environment, every little bit helps...I'm glad everyone doesn't have the all or nothing attitude. That would be extremely silly and stupid for them to say, "Well, I don't want to give up driving my car, so I won't do anything to help the environment."

With that thought process you shouldn't try to improve anything unless you can reduce your effect on the environment completely. for example with this you shouldn't change your bulbs to compact Flours. because you own a car and drive to work. I try to have as littel impact as I can and make choices based on the environment. I take a longer way to work that is more fuel efficient. But I guess I shouldn't do that because I am in the car anyways. Everyone should try at least a little bit to make a difference and the environment will benefit.

And all I'm saying is:
Plant a garden, ride a bike, be aware of consumables DAILY, and the products you use in great quanities. These things are tangable effects that people concerned can make, and is not an all or nothing attitude. I suppose when it cuts into "convienances" people just are no longer gunghoe. My bad...didn't mean to be "silly or stupid". Just thought that my opinions and suggestions were just as valid as those worried about "heavy metal poisoning" and have a greater impact on the ecosystem.

Sean covered the subject well. So with all that in mind, how much of a problem to the reefs, environment and fish life is the lead that thousands of divers are packing, day in and day out, year in and year out? Answer: I don't know.
That is I don't know of any studies that have approached this subject. I know there have been a lot of discussions about it but I have never seen any good science on it. Lead has major ramifications when released in our streams and oceans. This is a fact. Is the amount of lead leaching caused by divers enough to do harm? Or is the amount of leaching insignificant? Again, who knows. Would our efforts and attention be better spent if focused in other areas that we as divers really can make a difference? I think so, at least at this point. Helping with programs to protect reefs, dolphins, whales etc. either with your time or contributions is likely more important than the subject of the lead in your BC. If we are truely looking to do some good for the aquatic environment that we live for and enjoy our sport in than there are lots of ways to do some really good work and be able to feel good about it.
