Fixed vs Folder dive knifes

Hello all,
I currently have a fixed blade wenoka dive knife that Ive owned for years. I always have found it a pain to strap a large knife to my calf.

Some companies are now selling folder style dive knives. I know Spyderco is known for excellent quality and was considering there salt series knife.

So which do you prefer? Fixed or Folder.

The less fumbling around, the less chance of dropping the knife. This coupled with the fact I wear gloves means I like a standard knife. Perhaps a smaller knife on your BC would serve the purpose.

Agreed.

I won't wear a folder for canoe or kayak, so now way for diving.

Now. For everyday? Sure. I carry a folder. But that's not for emergency disentanglement.

I have a small fixed ss blade wenoka that I have attached to my BC waist belt. I think using a folding blade would be a pain.

Good points so far. Ive always been impressed with my spyderco knives so I figured the salt version was be just as awesome.

Which smaller knife do you prefer? Ive never been happy with the dive knives Ive owned.

Spyderco is a great company, and the "steel" on their Salt folders is impressive. That said, fixed blade knives are stronger (especially full-tang knives) and faster to deploy. Good sheaths also make the small fixed blades easier to carry and more accessible than folders, especially in activities like diving. Spyderco should have a Salt fixed blade shortly. You may also want to try the Benchmade H20.

I like folder knives for carrying around, (Gerber Paraframe is the best knife I have ever owned), but it seems that for dive knives, a fixed blade (especially a titanium, full tang knife) would be better.

Titanium is no good for knives. It dulls really fast and is hard to get a good edge on it. The H1 and X15TN alloys are the way to go. No rust and they hold a good edge.
