Finger Spool

Hey, anyone use one of these?

Finger Spool, DIR and Technical, ScubaToys, Finger Spool

I am wondering how heavy the line is? How many lbs its good for. I have an SMB

Large Safety Stop Signal with Dump Valve , Accessories-Signaling Devices, ScubaToys, Large Safety Stop Signal with Dump Valve

that will do 45 lbs of lift. I want to make sure the reel I get will handle the load if on the off chance I want to use it for something other than shooting the smb.

It should handle 45 lbs with no problem.

#24 line has a rating of 230 lbs
#36 line has a rating of 330 lbs
#48 line has a rating of 405 lbs

This info came from Reef Scuba. Just scroll down the page.

The spools you gave the link for are probably loaded with #24 line (100 ft).

This may be a better buy and it includes a SS double ender and choice on sizes: Finger Spools with High Visibility Yellow Nylon Line - Dive Reels - Diving Finger Spools

I had to shorten the 100 ft line by about 20 ft to make it easier to clip off the double ender. Still plenty of line to shoot a DSMB similar to yours from 30 - 50 ft.

Thanks for the heads up...I think I still have a gift card for DiveSports too.

Sarah...... being you are in NY and dive chilly/cold waters locally....you might consider getting a spool with a 'larger' finger hole....you with need it with gloved hands. Dive Rite makes a really nice one. The standard finger holes like those you are looking at work fine bare handed but not very well with gloves. IMO

Large model: Dive Rite Finger Spools

Thanks for the idea-it may make more difference to my husband than me. Even in my gloves I think I could do a smaller diameter hole.

Interesting comment. I don't use the finger hole when I deploy my DSMB. I just let everything go and watch the spool dance in front of me until it hits the surface. When it stops dancing, I grab it again.

Is the spool neutral? What happens if you try to grab it and miss?
