The light works great underwater and is visiable for a long distance. The reason I got the light was to use it to mark entry/exit points during a night dive. For instance, if the light is attached to a anchor line during a night dive than you're free to explore the area around with out having to run a reel or keep track of compass headings and distances. Just get in the water and explore then swim back to the strobe. But for in the water identification/location I'd suggest using either a chemlume light stick or one of the yoke tank lights. I've got a red yoke tank light that just flashes on and off every second.

http://www.scuba.com/scuba-gear-31/0...oke-Light.html This is what I have for "personal identification". I can say to a group follow me I'm the one with the "red flashing light on my 1st stage". They come in different colors, flashing, non-flashing and different sizes depending on what type of first stage you have. The best part is they're not excessivly bright and from talking to the people I've dove with the light didn't bother them; and came in handy in lower vis water. This link shows all the available colors... Yoke Light | Innovative Scuba Shopping Cart
