I can't speak for the recommended shears, but the the EMT shears, IMO, are only good for about a year of diving use before they break. The blades are brittle, and on many pairs the center bolt is not corrosion resistant. I got a 10 pack on eBay cheap, and have broken half of them.

Yup. They're pretty much disposable. Cheap enough to be so, fortunately. I really wish someone would make a Titanium pair, though.

Most of the EMT shears are not so good a quality...that we all agree on....the point I make is that they are also limited in their ability to get a job of cutting thru tough line/cable done....they are only useful on what a dive knife will cut. A hd or wreck set of shears are a much better tool and will cut through all but really thick cable....and mine have a serrated edge for saw motion cutting.

here is a suggestion for everyone.....

Wherever you decide to mount your knife or shears, make sure you can put it back in easily.

What I mean is, put your BC on, your mask on (to limit your range of vis to that of when you're diving. And maybe even put your regulator in your mouth and THEN try to put your knife/shears back in their sheath with your gear on.

Youd be surprised how with your gear on how hard it is to see that sheath when it's mounted tight against the bottom part of your BC.

If you can't do it on land, chances are you can't do it in the water either.

BTW... I found this out in the water. Not on land. But it could have been prevented initially if I had done what I posted above.

valuable lesson.

One other thing to add to that.....do the above while also wearing your dive gloves. You'd be surprised how much more fun it makes finding the narrrow sheath.

Better still, check this stuff out in safe in-water conditions, like a pool. A partially-filled BC changes things, also, and make it harder to reach things. Not to mention everything is more slippery underwater.

LOL, don't forget in freezeing water with a good current wearing our dry suits (add in the adrinline from haveing just gotten yourself out of a hairy spot), I was there in a cold fast river with monofilament line everywhere!

Might be best to do like instructors, carry one above the waist, one on the leg and a pair of shears somewhere as backup.

Backups hurt nothing but some drag and some space, but can save your life, not jjust knives but, ponies, regs, etc.

Dive safe all
