1. Compass (wrist mounted)
2. Nitrox computer (wrist mounted)
3. Small light

I am personally not a big fan of consoles. I would rather have things on my wrist or arm where I can see them at a glance. The only gauge I have clipped off is my SPG.

I bought a compass and lights for my AOW eight years ago and haven't used them since. I would still suggest renting and buying gear you need as your diving evolves.

no no.....you can always velcro the compass on the dash of your vehicle & it will serve 2 purposes then(or 3 if you take it hunting).......

Yep, I got rid of it. Way too bulky in my opinion. Besides, I am using a dive computer, and even if that failed, my buddy would provide system redundancy.

My birthday is coming up so I have the possibility of a light set and computer being bought by mom and the fiance. Would LED lights be better than standard? I'm looking at the Princeton Adventure packs. Probably an Aeris wrist computer.

For my AOW (PPB, Nav, Night, Deep, Wreck) we were required to have a primary light, backup light, tank light, compass, and a slate. Depending on where you dive, gloves and a hood are nice for the deep dive, as is a knife if you might have a chance of running into some fishing line or rope.

I wasn't required to have anything for AOW (I did Nitrox, nav, wreck and equipment - SSI) though I do wish I'd had my own computer. I don't have my own reg either, so I used a rental one (included in cost of class) but I used a borrowed computer for the open water part on Nitrox, wreck and equipment. I'll need a compass for nav (needed for wreck too) but I'll borrow that as well.

So, I'd say go for the computer. It makes life much easier.

I'm about to start my AOW. The dive shop that I am working with is doing the mandatory nav & deep dives along with Peak, Night, maybe Search & Recovery.

They require a compass, primary light, backup light, strobe or lightstick, slate, and a knife. This is along with reg, BCD, tank, etc. They rent the primary equipment but the additional required equipment the do not.

I've got the slate, compass (in my console), knife and the Aeris XR1 wrist computer. I've got a thread going under lights trying to come up with the right 3 piece light kit. It looks to be between a Princeton Tec set up or an Underwater Kinetics, but definitely LED.
