What gear for advanced

I received my open water card last summer and plan on advanced this spring. Other than a wetsuit, I only bought what was need for the open water (mask, fins, BCD, reg with standard guages, etc). What would be good gear to add to the arsenal for advanced certification?

A Compass is a must and a light if you plan on the Night Dive other than that nothing you have to buy. Now if you are just looking for excuses to spend money we can help you with excuses!

I don't call well planned foolish spending an excuse.

I've seen a number of light sets with anywhere from two to about five different lights, what's really needed?

A good basic compass.

A good primary light and a nice smaller back-up light.....ST has a good selection of lights in most any budget.

You pretty much got all you need. You will most likley invest in a computer if that is not included in standard gauges.

I would not worry about the light. Most likley you will not do much night diving aroud here. I sugest you do when traveling, but you can rent and not worry abouy lugging it on the trip.

I'm local so if you ever have questions let me know, I'll even meet you at ST if i can. Like i need an excuse to stop by the shop.

I bought the Princeton Tec LED light package for AOW class. In my class (with Scuba Toys) we were required to dive both primary and backup lights on the night and deep dives. Needed strobe for the night dive as well. You will also need a slate and, as previously mentioned, a compass.

Computer was not required, but there was only one (out of about 10) AOW students that did not have a computer and it made things much more painful for them and their buddy. We had to move things around a bit due to weather, and the one buddy pair's having to dive the tables made day 2 a really long day for all of us.

You will need a primary light and tank light to do the night dive in ASD. You can probably get by without a backup but I would suggest you go ahead and get one.

I bought a kit and have been really pleased with it.
Princeton Tec LED Light Pack, Light Paks, Princeton Tec, Princeton Tec LED Light Pack

This is not the only kit they sell. They have several in different price ranges.

Check with you instructor as what specific gear you need for AOW. That is, what stuff they won't supply (for free or a fee).

Then, you can make your decision about what is the highest priority for your next purchase(s).

I've started looking at some light sets with just a main and backup light plus I like the strobe Scuba Toys sells that replaces the regulator knob. As far as a computer, I've been wanting to stay old school for a while with just analog guages with a compass but I wouldn't want to affect the whole class. I'll have to stop by Scuba Toys and talk with one of the instructors about that. I wonder if I can rent a set up with a computer just for the class.

AOW

I would have to say a good compass, (wrist mounted) and a computer that works for both air and Nitrox.
