Diving Mentor Program-

Wonder if anyone's given thought to starting a mentor program so to speak, where newbies like me and others can hook up with more seasoned divers and dive with them, to learn more and broaden their educational experience; you can learn a lot from the courses but nothing beats hands-on diving with someone more experienced to gain more in-depth knowledge.
Just a thought......

There are several dive groups devoted to travel where this generally happens all the time. Check into trips offered by ScubaToys.com or SingleDivers.com for examples. (In fairness, you should be aware that I am a member of both sites and have somewhat of an interest in both for differing reasons.)

If you are looking for a recurring mentor, however, the best opportunities probably arise at your local dive site that's popular with the training crowd--just show up, introduce yourself around, and you'll probably be surprised at how many folks would be willing to dive with you...

...even if they've already heard about the "PlatypusMan".

I think you'll find quite a few more experienced divers willing to help out with newer divers, you just have to post and ask. While I am by no means experienced if you would like to join me I'll be out at CSSP on the 18th and am looking for a dive buddy. I'll actually be spending the night out there provided it isn't too hot but on the 19th I'll be over with the ScubaToys rescue class probably playing a victim.

I can't help you from where I'm at, but I started up something like that a couple of years ago. It worked out pretty nicely. It got divers that had never been to our local lake out there and diving. I actually stole the idea from someone up in the PNW. I plan on continuing with it in Florida. If you ever head to North Florida to dive the springs let me know. I'll take you on a tour.

While I know of no program like that, we have divers and I'm one of them that lets others know we'll dive with them.

If anybody here doesn't have a buddy and dives the Table Rock lake area give me a hollar. I'm down there many times, all year round. Winter, Summer, Spring and Fall.

This is also a common practice in my area. If you are in WV just shoot me a PM and we can go diving.

You know, I also learn a lot by trawling the forums and reading what others say. They're things to think about, at least.

WOW- thanks for all the responses!
ps- I'd love to go on the 18th, but 2 things hold me back: 1) I won't be getting my new Zeagle Brigade out of layaway till the end of the month, 2) we're doing a network domain migration all weekend (yeah, gotta work- it'll help pay for that Brigade!)
