SDI online nitrox course

Has anyone taken the SDI computer based nitrox course? If so is it comparable/accepted to traditional course?

I havent taken the online version of any course, however you still have to have an local instructor give you an exam and do your skills portion which their will be an added fee.

I think it would benefit you more to just go sit in on a 3 hour class and get your cert, not that the online thing is any worse or better, so long as you understand the material.

I did the TDI course at LDS-Glad I did as I had MANY questions that needed answers from instructor-online might be ok to do as study guide but having a human to bounce stuff off seems essential, not just for final exam and practical application-was going to have husband do online PADI nitrox but he will now be doing it the traditional way

I did the classroom version too. Three hours of lecture, a quick written test, and a practical exam, Shazam I was a Nitrox Diver!

My LDS charged $125 for books, classroom, tests, and "C" card. Not sure if it is any cheaper doing the online version.

Haven't done the SDI course, but Nitrox courses (not the advanced nitrox that is part of tech training) have always struck me as ludicrously over-complicated and over-priced.

It boils down to: use these different tables, analyze your tanks, don't smoke around nitrox tanks, go dive.

Aside from the 20 seconds it takes for hands-on learning to use an analyzer (which any nitrox certified diver can demonstrate), any OW student can learn all of that without another diver, let alone an instructor, anywhere near them.

My wife hates math. She did the SDI online nitrox course and is happy with the results.

That's good to know. My wife REALLY hates math, and I've been worried about what's going to happen when I insist that she get Nitrox certified before we go on a dive vacation. My LDS pushes SDI a lot these days, so I'll have to look into that.

It depends on what you're wanting to do with the Nitrox cert. More knowledge is not a bad thing. And it's fairly essential knowledge to have if you plan to take things farther with Advanced Nitrox and other tech courses.

Ok, I left out PPO calculations from my list, true.

Still, it is something of an odd duck in my estimation. I've always felt that it should be rolled into either OW or AOW simply due to (a) how common Nitrox is, and (b) how little real additional work it is to learn.

It is absolutely essential knowledge, I don't dispute that. But to me there's not enough meat to require an instructor level certification to teach it. Like basic first aide, it's something any competent DM should be able to easily cover.

Was it the full cert or did she have to do instructor time as well?
