I found rescue to be the first 'real' course I did. OW and AOW tend to be very much led by the hand, touch-feely type courses (not a bad thing).

Rescue required us to step-up and take things seriously. Understanding the consequences of underwater problems and the difficulties in dealing with them is a big wake-up. Certainly puts contingency planning in a different light.

Well done, enjoy the course. You should learn heaps.

Thanks all for your kind words of encouragement. Just picked up the book and will try to get a head start on the book work.

Anyone know what the O2 provider course consists of? Is it similar to nitrox math?, or more first aid related?

O2 provider is exceptionally easy (but there is some very important info discussed) - in short, it deals with the proper application of Oxygen to a victim...

there is no math - it is all first aid related stuff...

actually ,rescue and O2 provider are 2 courses i would like to do .

im just in the process of setting myself up for home Nitrox fills and having a Bottle of 100% O2 on my boat seems like an added safety measure .

would be good to be able to administer O2 if i have a bend or suspected bend on the boat or even if a diver has a missed safety stop or overly stressful and deep dive.

would be good to hear how it goes

Regards
Matty

If you set yourself up with emergency oxygen, make sure you have p l e n t y of gas. Giving O2 at 100% to a distressed diver chews through your reserves very quickly. Don't skimp on the cylinder size. Allow say 25 LPM for the time it will take for the injured person to be delivered to emergency care...

Good advice. Also, if you have a bent diver, you may need to put his buddy on O2 as well and this should be considered. We use a standard steel 12l which should give 2 divers about 45 minutes of pure O2, running flat out.
A rich Nitrox mix can be used if you run out or if nothing else is available, but it's not nearly as good as 100%.

Wink Just passed 02 provider

You were right it was pretty easy. It was good to revisit CPR and a bit of emergency management. Good to set up the different 02 rigs as well. I will need to find a new demand valve and mask for my 02 bottle, mine is a constant flow set up that I got with a bunch of other used gear and it doesnt doesn't deliver at a high enough rate. Good to figure that out before it is needed.

Thanks again for the encouragement.

Next Monday is the first rescue class room session...

I've also signed up and done all of the classwork. Now just need to do my dives. Hopefully finish this year.

WaScubaDude, was your O2 Provider course the DAN course or NAUI/PADI/SSI/etc course? If not DAN, then you may wish to consider that. It's almost the exact same skill set.

The constant flow is a good option as well. If the victim is unconscious a constant flow is necessary. See if you can find something with both options.

The kit we used for my Rescue Diver had both options available on the one cylinder. Don't know how expensive it was. The guy who taught us, teaches EMS and Fire Department for a living; he just borrows the equipment from his day job.
