swim quals. for DM
From searching the forums, I have come up with the following required swim qualifications for divemaster.
400 yard swim 800 yard mask and snorkel swim 15 minute tread water or float Are these it or have I missed some? Obviously, these do not include the classes required to assist with. Generally, I am not worried about classwork or tests, but the physical stuff, I want to be prepared for. My town just recently got a community center with an indoor pool so I can finally start doing laps on a regular basis. |

yea that should cover it. also know that they are on scales of points, where i think 3 is the top, and you have to get x number of points to pass the physical stuff, so, you can completely bomb one and do well on the otehr but, ultimately you should be able to complete the swims etc, maybe not in the right time frame but still compelted none the less

How long do you have for each swim?
Just start going to the gym and practice swimming. Do a day on the kickboard and then a day with actual swimming. Treading water is easy if you find YOUR way to do it. There are different techniques that people use, so go practice which one works best for you. One thing that people do is find some object like a lamp post or top of a tree and focus on it. Good luck!! ![]()

I don't remember what the actual time breakdowns are.
However, from a strategy point of view, I would recommend doing the float first. Unless you have stones in your craw, you should be able to float/tread water for 15 minutes easily. (you must have your hands out of the water for the last two minutes). This gives you 5 points out of the 12 you must get to pass the endurance tests. Getting 3 on the tired diver tow/push and the mask/snorkle/fins/swim gets you to 11 points out of the 12. (3 + 3 + 5 = 11) Now, all you need to do is finish the swim without stopping or drowning and you get the 1 point needed to pass! Don't sweat it! If my divemate, John, and I can pass (middle aged, out of shape...), you should be able to as well!
