One major difference in the PADI vs NAUI Master Diver is that NAUI requires other evaluation & training beyond the AOW, Rescue & handful of specialties. PADI's Master Diver is simply another card which you can purchase with no other training or skill evaluation once you have AOW, specialties & rescue.

or do you have to do another (Master Diver) course?
I have been working on my divemaster book work. I read if you are a "Master Diver" that when you become an instructor you are immediately a Specialty instructor.

So, there is some benefit to holding the PADI Master Diver card. To think, I just got it to tease a friend who does not have theirs...

Not quite true. You have to gain a certain amount of experience within a specialty in order to teach it (I don't know the precise details, like everything else "it's in the PADI Instructor Manual"). Taking a specialty class counts towards that experience. But I don't believe it fully satisfies the requirements and it only applies to the specialties you have taken, MSD or no MSD. The MSD card itself means nothing.

I was sure I read that, but cannot find it now. I must still be jet lagged...

Well, just think about it logically. All a MSD card means is that you completed 5 specialties out of 20 or so specialties available. How would that card qualify one to teach something they maybe hadn't even done?

It would be more accurate to say that it's the highest non-leadership certification offered by PADI and NAUI. I would argue that there are many non-professional certifications that extend your capabilities as a diver far beyond what a master diver would be able to do safely.

Basic decompression and advanced nitrox training is just the tip of the iceberg that lies beyond... or beside I suppose, as Master Diver isn't a prerequisite for any higher levels training that I'm aware of.

So with PADI, there is no special "master diver course."?

You just get it by buying the card once you've done the other stuff...

correct?

SSI also has a Master Diver course. The requirements are 5 specialties (of which one must be Stress and Rescue) and 50 logged dives. AOW is 4 specialties (any) and 25 logged dives. Specialty diver is any 2 specialties and 12 logged dives. Since Divemaster requires Stress and Rescue as well, that is kinda a given on the way to Dive Master.

I am just beginning my Master Dive course, can anyone tell me what the test is like, my instructor said it was a fairly hard test and goes in depth, based on what I've read so far it is an in-depth review of everything you have learned up to this pont? Any help would be appreciated.
