The basic definition is Master Diver is the highest level of recognition in the Non-proffessional level. Where Divemaster is the entry level into the proffessional world of diving.

Masterdiver is the highest NON LEADERSHIP certification you can obtain. It is great for obtaining more experiencing and diving more in different environments
Divemaster is a LEADERSHIP level certification that places a lot of responsibility and liability on the individual. It is for people who want to pursue careers in the diving indutry as you are now certified to lead other certified divers and must carry liability insurance likewise. Divemaster also includes membership dues to the certifying agency. Divemasters are mainly employed at dive shops, resorts, and charters. |

I see by your bio you are NAUI certed...I will not hold that again you--lol! I copied from NAUI's web site:
"Gain the in-depth knowledge that will establish you as a recognized authority in your diving club or group. Thrill to the adventure of open water dives in settings that will test your abilities to their limit while expanding your diving capabilities and experience. Then proudly carry the most coveted and respected certification card in recreational diving - that of the NAUI Master Scuba Diver. The Master Scuba Diver course is a continuing education certification course for divers who wish to increase their understanding and enjoyment of diving. This course is an excellent progression toward NAUI Leadership roles. During your training, you will engage in a minimum of eight open water dives including the following required dives: * Emergency procedures and rescue * Deep/simulated decompression diving * Limited visibility or night diving * Underwater navigation * Search and recovery – light salvage You can also choose from many different dives for your elective dives such as: * Skin diving * Environmental study or survey * Air consumption (practical application) * Boat diving * Shore diving * Hunting and collecting * Or other special interest dives If you are 15 years old and have a NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver certification or its equivalent, you may be ready for the Master Scuba Diver class. Ready, set, learn!"

the OW, AOW,Rescue, 5 specialties Certs(Nitrox, Deep, Nav etc) After this you will take the Master diver Program and be the highest certification OR the Dive Master Program to continue to become an instructor. It really depends on where you want to head....If you think you want to be an instructor soon, then go to the Dive Master, if not then the Master Diver..But understand that the Dive Master has liability and other obligations to the Agency.
