I'm thinking about doing a quick trip to FL to do a couple of dives and break in my new gear before my trip to Roatan in June. I actually have never dived in FL, just snorkelled cause I wasn't certified at the time. I like the laid back places - Longboat Key/Sarasota, St. Pete Beach, the Keys, Pensacola, and Ft. Lauderdale when its quiet. I have a small budget though - spent all my $$ on the Roatan trip.

Any suggestions for somewhere in FL that would have decent diving and warm water in April? And by warm, I'm hoping for at least 75, 80 would be even better! :smiley9:

I just went through my dive log and the average temp for Ft. Lauderdale in April is 74 degrees. The Keys may be a couple of degrees warmer. There is a definite warming that happens the end of April and into May. The average temp in May is probably 80 deg.

Date........Temp..Depth
4/2/2004....74....71
4/2/2004....66....33
4/10/2005...75....79
4/10/2005...75....65
4/22/2006...79....60
4/22/2006...78....70
4/21/2007...73....94
4/21/2007...72....72

Average...74......68

P.S. If you throw out the one anomaly (66 deg) you would have an average temp of 75 degrees. I think that I must have hit a cold water upwelling on that one dive.

One more thing. I have noticed that I only get out one weekend per year in April. I am not sure why this is. It could be weather related. 15 + mph winds out of the east cause rough seas and poor vis. Check out NOAA.gov and Weather Underground to get the latest Marine forecast before you fly/drive all the way down here.

You can also check the water temp by looking at the National Data Buoy Center (http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/Florida.shtml). Just click on the white & red boxes with the lettering. Not all have water temp, but many do. As of this moment, the surface water temp at Molasses Reef just off Key Largo is 74.5 degrees.

Thanks so much - this is very helpful!
How about gulf-side?

And a side note... I must have missed the memo about ProDive closing. That's so sad! Its been about 7 years since I was there, but Captain Stu and his crew were very good to me. I was on a snorkeling trip with them on 9/11 when everything went down...

Try 40 Fathom Grotto, 72 degrees, calm, no current
