I see that there is an AOWT class for $99. I would love to come, but where is it?

Classroom portion is at ScubaToys in Carrollton, TX; call the shop on Monday to get the information about start times and dates. Ask for Greg Williamson, ST's Director of Training.

Open water checkouts for AOW are at Lake Travis near Austin, TX. There is in fact one coming up this weekend--and yes, I'll be there both Saturday and Sunday if anyone wants to stop by and say hello!

How many nights do they meet? Why is the OW in Austin? Thats a little far from me, why not CSSP?
Wish I lived closer, thats a great price. It's $318 in my area:(

The AOW is done at Travis, rather than CSSP, because CSSP is not deep enough for the required "deep" dive. Bummer, I know, but driving your arm into the sludge at the bottom of CSSP to get a deeper max depth is regarded as poor form, and is really hard on wrist computers.

how deep do you give in AOW for the 'deep dive'?

It has to be at least 60 feet, and most instructors want to go deeper than that, say to 100, to be able to have the AOW students experience, in a controlled environment, whether or to what extent they are affected by narcosis.

Our LDS does there open water at Lake Ouchita in Arkansas, I am thinking about doing it in June, but 100 ft would be so cold there! Maybe they will let me get by with 60ft.

I see. Well I really don't want to have to dig into the sludge to get cert. I want to do my Advanced, but it may have to wait until next year.

I'm planning on doing the June class. You should do it if you can! I'd love to hang out with you!:smiley20:

Ya'll need to go down there with ST is was a blast . And get Platy to lead the night dive. And in june at 100 ft Travis is not that cold a 3 mil should be fine for thin blooded people. I had just my trunks on and your not at 100 but for a few.

Or just venture this way and do it at ST- they have an awesome AOW class!

Just think the money you will save by taking it from them --$99-- you can put in the gas tank to get here and there.:smiley36: Really when you do take it they have one fun weekend down there.

Same here; however, my husband and I are taking the class next week. We live in Oklahoma, so about an hour and 15 minutes from ST and 4.5 to 5 hours from Austin. Oh well, it will be fun. We are looking forward to the trip and the training!

while ST is pretty far away you might be able to find sombody to carpool with from your area. Or if not you might be able to meet up with sombody from dallas and split the gas for the trip. Otherwise It is rough, I had a similar situation with my advanced in that Bainbridge quarry is about 6 hours from pittsburgh where I lived at the time. Its not fun makeing that drive alone. That said at least lake travis gets warmer than 40 degrees at depth.

also with the ST classes do they do classroom and ow portons on seperate weekends. The padi shop I used did both on the same weekend with some pre assigned studying and coursework during surface intervals.

I would be more than welcome to join up with someone to do my open water with ST sometime soon. The going rate is 199 for one and 99 for 2. With that math all together, you can look on it as ST paying your gas and then some when you pay the original price.
