So I am watching the boob tube and on comes a John Deer commercial for riding mowers. The ad shows rather large mowers and rather small lawns. So I can only summate that these guys are compensating for something.

Now as a kid I had to mow some where around a acre of grass. Even with a riding mower it still me over 2 hours to mow everything. Now I got a small lawn and get the wife to mow it :D.

So how big is your mower and how small is your yard?

Mower is 42" tractor, lawn is about 1 acre. Takes almost 2 hours.

just a standard walmart push mower

the yard is less than 1/4 acre and the house sits on half of that. takes me 1 hour including weed-eatin.

it takes that long only because i live under 200 year old oaks, so i'm always pickin up limbs!

So, tell us. How did you convince your wife to mow the yard?

I have 3 acers to mow with a commercial DixeChopper and a 52" deck. It takes every bit of 4 1/2 hours depending on how long I let it get before mowing.

I have 1.75 acres and to ride, push around the bushes, and weed eat, it takes me a good 4-5 hours.

Now my wife does like to help, but she doesn't like to drive the riding mower, so she pushes while I ride. I know the neighbors think I'm a lazy bastard.

Super small yard, ordinary Sears pushmower. Real men dont sit on their arse while they mow.
Backyard I did away with all grass. It's just pool and landscaping. Great place to finish off a tank of air after doing lake dives or quick gear checkouts.

Yard is a little over an acre and I have a 46" riding mower. Takes a full day when I bag all of the clippings and/or put them out in the compost heap in the woods.

While growing up (a Military Brat), we had a corner lot for all my mowing years till college. My yard now is all wooded in the back, and only about 500 square feet of grass in the front. I use about 2 gallons of gas all summer. But weed eating takes twice as long as mowing, but I'm still done in about 30 minutes.

My mower is a basic push mower. I tried one of those retro mowers (no motor or engine) with the blades that spin when you push, but my yard was so small, you couldn't get the blades spinning fast enough to cut easily.

It takes me about 2 to 2.5 hours to mow my 3/4 acres with my 42" mower. However, if I didn't bag it, it would be a lot quicker. I spend it seems half that time driving it around and emptying the bagger in the back alley.

I'm one of the few on my street/area that doesn't have a "Mexican Imigrant yard crew" cutting my grass.

A push mower would be a real bitch for my yard. I've got thick bermuda grass in the front. not bagging it looks like crap.

Anyone know where I can get an aftermarket cup holder mount for a Craftsman riding lawn mower? (no I'm not kidding...)

my riding mower is to big for my little yard, but i hated push mowing and I got my John Deere with 38" deck used for about what a new self-propelled mower was going to cost me.

not to mention I had 2 summers where my wife had to push mow since I injured my ankle and shoulder - figured she wouldnt mind a riding mower if by some chance i injure myself again (which is not really out of the question)

or just get you a magnetic coolie cup - they have a magnet that lets you store them on the front of the frig and as long as your mower has a flat metal spot like my small JD mower, you can place it down in front of the seat - warning though - it will move around a bit with the vibration, bit easy to find and put back

here is one similar to what i have (please ignore the logo unless you happen to be a Bucs fan - first one that popped up on google) - Tampa Bay Buccaneers Red Magnetic Can Coolie (http://www.footballfanatics.com/NFL_Tampa_Bay_Buccaneers_Cups_Mugs_And_Shots/Tampa_Bay_Buccaneers_Red_Magnetic_Can_Coolie)

I have an acre, about 1/3 of which I mow. The terrain here is not "rider" friendly, so I push mow the whole thing. I hate mowing grass though! It's got to be one of the most redundant, mindless, pointless, unrewarding things a person can do with their time! Mow it, watch it grow, mow it, watch it grow, etc. etc., all summer! Then comes Fall, and all the damned leaves.
My next homestead is going to be all paved, and artificial trees that don't "shed". I'll just hose it off every couple of weeks and be done!

actually i mowed the front lawn today. I have a Honda self-propelled. But regardless of how the grass looks, I wish my grass was emo, because it would cut itself.

I usually mow our back yard.
We have an electric mower here in Germany the gas ones aren't so popular.
It takes maybe 7 minutes.
Most Europeans don't have yards and if they do it is a back yard.

2 acres, 50 trees, and lots of other stuff to mow around. 48 inch John Deere 23 HP zero turn - SWEEEEET. Of course I wash it - but can't say that the wax has made it that far. 2 hours to mow, and an hour best case weed eating - depends on whether I do the fence or not.

4 acres takes me 1 hour 45 minutes with this 60" zero turn Products-Super Z with a XR-7 Deck (http://www.hustlerturf.com/Web-content/ProductPages/SuperZXR7/SZPage/SZpage.html)

It used to take about 4 1/2 hours on my old John Deere with a 48" deck. I hardly ever wash the mower. The zero turn mowers go way too fast and take two hands to drive so you can't do beer while mowing.

1 acre on a Cub Cadet Z-Force 44" Commercial Zero-Radius.
1 hour to cut / 1 hour to weed eat and edge

No washing, but monthly lubes at about 6 grease fittings
Annual - tear down deck and sand / repaint where the lousy factory paint has chipped off.

LOL, yeah, I traded down to a smaller tractor so I could make it a universal machine to include mowing duties. It will never be accused of finese. If a perfectly manicured yard with crisscross stripes is your thing then a belly mount finsih mower on a diesel tractor with utility tires may not be the best tool.

Rough stuff, it is a tractor, if it gets to rough the loader blade makes quick work of that and maybe a finish swipe with the boxblade.

When I downsize to a home in Florida or Sumatra or Guam ;) the Kubota goes with me, even if my yard is five square feet, it will be mowed with a diesel tractor!

Rough stuff--ha.
