Yesterday was my first time back abolone diving after a few years. There are some new things that needs to be done like tagging the abalone with tie wrap and a tag. Glad I read the instructions because while I was changing a person from Fish and game came out of no where and wanted to see my catch. He measured one of them. Whew! I was releaved that everything went ok.

why do you have to tag the abalone?

Basically tagging is to limit taking abalones. Using Scuba is also prohibited since it will be easier to take them.
In California, you can only take 3 red abalones a day max or 24 a year. So if you do not tag them, The Department of Fish and Game can fine you if they catch you not tagging immedietly after removing them from the water.

so you're freediving for them? how deep do you typically find them?

Freediving is the legal way. The deeper you go the bigger the abalones because less people can get to them. I have seen an old couple just wearing very long boots, did not even dive. They do study the tide and go during low tide.

sounds like a lot of work. no wonder they're so expensive at the market.

it would deplete the abalone population really quickly if that were allowed.
