Im looking at maybe biding on this tank. Can anyone give me some info on these? Is it worth trying to pick up? Last hydro was done in 85. Best I can figure out is its a LP steel 72? Even if it does not pass hydro im thinking I can get it cheap enough that I can get my money back at the scrap yard. Here are some pics.

How much are you bidding for it. The valve although it is an old j valve might be worth something even if the tank fails.

I'd tell you don't bother. You won't get much for scrap... an aluminum pulls about 12 bucks... I doubt you'd get a buck for that little steel. And the valve has a straight through burst disk - which you can't use... so even if it passed hydro, depending on inside the tank - you might have a lot of rust and need to tumble... and by the time you ship it, tumble it, hydro it, vis it, replace the valve... It probably would not be worth it if you got it for free. Unless for some reason you really want a steel tank that holds 67 cubic feet of air.

But other opinions may vary....

Alright good points, I figured the valve would need to be replaced. Its local so no shipping. Guess ill pass on it, unless it stays at the price its at now.

It is easy enough to take the valve off and have a look inside. Judging by the outside I looks like it has seen little use. It appears to be galvanized under the coating which is a plus. Old steel 72's are great tanks with very good bouyancy. The valve is fine and the burst disk can be changed to the modern type. If the price is less than $40 or $50 I would buy it. I have 8 of them and always looking for more.

I can buy a good steel 72 for $75 or $80. A hydro costs maybe $45. So $30 is way to much for one out of hydro that may not pass. I'd pay only $10 or $15.

I bought some tanks a while back from a dive shop. They sold me 5 assorted tanks (4 steel one AL) for $50. That's about the going rate for old out of hydro tanks that may or may not pass inspection.
