Does anyone know anything about a trigger mechanism for a pole spear. The guide on the dive boat I was on last weekend was trying to describe it to me but I didn't really get it. If anyone knows where I can find one, I would love to have the link.

I had one years ago. It was a trigger mechanism that slid onto the spear and attached to the band. You pull the trigger to slide the mechanism up the spear and stretch the band. When you release the trigger, friction would hold it in a loaded position. When you are ready to shoot, just pull the trigger and the pole would slide. It made it easy to swim with the spear loaded without your hand getting tired. It worked pretty good actually. No idea who made it or where you would find one.

Sound like something that needs to be re-invinted

Oops, I just stuck my buddy in the butt with my pole spear. Who would swim around with a 6-8' pole spear with the rubber stretched and no target. See a fish - arm the spear. Simplicity at its best. Also where would the safety be? Flip off safety before spearing fish or just stretch rubber when fish sighted and release.

I just saw on DeeperBlue some discussion about a Hawaiian sling trigger.

If you come across it again I would love to have a link.

not a good thing. See Cmburch' comments above. If you want a trigger, I would recommend an arbolest.

Also, don't know that it would be permitted in places like the Islands. It might constitute a spear gun.

here's a pic. not a great one

I think that it would have it's time and place. Solo snorkeling or diving, it sure would speed up the process don't you think.

This is George Sandals' home made polespear triggering device. Take a look, I'm going to try this design but may use a different collar at the spearhead end. My use would be for small rockfish in the 1-3 lbs. class or Lingcods.

I have been looking for this trigger idea for years and this design looks good. I/m not sure but I think I saw the triggering handle back during the 1980's that was made of red/orange plastic and had a button that held pressure on the fiberglass pole spear shaft. It wasn't very safe as it would tend to fire off if you didn't keep your finger on the button to hold the shaft in place.
