I know this is purly arbitrary and nobody could say for sure (of course). But I got to thinking about the fact that we booked our Florida Keys trip for July 27-August 3rd, smack dab in the middle of hurricane season. I would absolutely HATE for a storm to screw up my diving plans and so fourth. So what do you think my odds are of there being a hurricane to mess up our plans? I'm voting for 10% (or less)LOL. This will be fun to look back on later and see what happened. Kinda like a message board time capsule.:)

they seem to be worse later in the season, but basically you've got a 50/50 chance. had a NC dive trip cancelled one september couple years back...hurricane Ophelia....ended up my sister and I went down anyway, no diving, just to get away. it churned off of fl for couple days and ended up we had a good time, until last day it started getting close to nc.
Good Luck!

Get trip insurance. It'll cover a hurricane...

Do you have DAN or another diving insurance? If not, I'd be more worried about that than a hurricane....

Oh yeah i'm with diveassure on the insurance. for the trip, we rented a 3 bedroom house from a private person. difficult to get insurance but there was a clause that said they would offer us another time in the event of the unforseeable.

i have learn the "big time" to worry about hurricanes is from late august to late october. not to say they will not happen, they have, but the likelyhood of hurricanes during those times are very high. but the people living in the keys don't worry too much i would go and have a goodd time and if a hurricane hits , than you will be drunk, because everyone down there loves those hurricane parties!!!!!

Once the season starts it seems it is 1 storm after another.
It really isn't a question of if there will be a storm while you are vacationing but if it will be close enough to effect your vacation and what magnatude it will be if it is.
In most cases the storm will either be somewhere else or will not be close enough for anything more than some poor weather that passes quickly.

I say that it will be <10% chance of affecting your vacation. Enjoy.

The odds of a storm hitting where you are at any given time is probably fairly small. We've traveled to the islands for 20 years during hurricane season and have never been disturbed. We've come close by a day or two, get the insurance and enjoy yourself.

Probably less than 1% or insurers wouldn't even be there. A hurricane impacts the Keys about once every 3 or 4 years at most, the impact time is less than a week (weather effects), and there are over 25 weeks in the hurricane season. The idea that it is 50-50 is beyond ridiculous.

We've taken some dive trips to the Carib during "shoulder season" at the time of year for hurricanes for several years and have never had a trip cancelled yet. But we came close on a January trip to Belize once because of sleet and ice in Houston...

I figure, "you pays your money, you takes your chances."

So far so good, the Caribbean is a pretty big place.
