I'm looking for a dive buddy for the Texas Clipper. on 12-14 July.
I'm in Dallas. If you live nearby, we can car pool and split gas. It's about a 10+ hour drive.

Sat - Drive to Padre
Sun - Dive the Clipper
Mon - Return to Dallas

Cost is $469 pp, which includes hotel for Friday and Saturday night.

I had a trip earlier this year cancel for this site. I hope to make it down still this year but it will be with the intent of extended range diving and penetration. Best wishes on your trip and will look forward to a possible trip report if you get to go. :)

When are you leaving (driving) from Dallas?

Coaster, given the 10-hour drive, probably no later than 7 AM.

I was looking at the Dive Operator's website (http://www.divesouthpadre.com/divetripscalendar.html); something is odd. The dive op shows a Saturday dive. Yet, Tom's Dive and Swim (see above link) implies a Sunday dive. Something is a bit off here.

That said, if the weekend of the 12th doesn't work for you, one of the other dates might. Let me know; I can arrange for hotel (I own a travel agency). To go cheaply, we can go double occupancy.

On a different thread/forum the guy who is leading the trip says the dive is on the 12th.

humm sounds fun, but not sure I want to make the trip with my current certificates.Check-out mitsuguy's report. Gentle current (1-2 kn). Deepest is 105 fsw. No penetration required (I'm not Wreck-certed, either).

That said, I fully support the Rule: Any diver can call any dive at any time for any reason. I've done so. Last year, I paid for a dive to the Flower Gardens. The hurricane was coming in at that time, and both Joe (ST) and my dive buddy (my former OW instructor) strongly suggested that this was not the dive for me due to strong currents (not depth). I canceled and lost $400. And by "any time", I mean, both divers can be a depth, and one of them decides "I don't want to be here". The Dive Is Done!!! Head to the surface.

I plan to dive EANx32 on first dive to extend bottom time. Second dive, will probably be air; definitely not as deep.

I just talked to Tom's Scuba and there is a typo. The dive is indeed on 12 July. So the trip should read: 11-13 July:

Friday - Drive to South Padre
Saturday - Dive the Clipper
Sunday - Drive to Dallas

on our boat, we had a new diver, not even a half dozen dives since his OW cert, and he got along just fine out there... he was comfortable with it, the depth wasn't bad as it was clear blue water, and he had some good dive buddies...

I do, however recommend some deep experience, and nitrox is great to extend your bottom times...

that being said, 105-110 feet is as deep as you need to go, the bottom is 137 fsw, but the boat is on it's side, so it's a mirror image much below 100'...

Mainly I would want my advanced nitrox/ deco cert before doing this. Even with 32% it would be a pretty short dive.

45 minutes per dive is pretty short?

My wife and I dove 32% and were limited by her on an 80 cf tank on both dives... I cheated and had a steel 120...

So, unless you plan on diving doubles or something larger than a steel 120, you will be limited by air consumption, not deco time... I came up with about 800 psi on the first dive...

How about an August trip?

Vercingetorix

Dives occur only through second week of August. You and I are dive buddies for 16 Aug Missile Silo Dive.

Let's see if we can work-out the logistics for Texas Clipper before that dive.

$469 sounds pretty pricy for 3 dives. The Texas Clipper would be a great dive but even if you estimate the hotel at $100 a night for 2 nights you are looking at $90 a tank or you could look at it for $156 for 3 dives. (If you dive Nitrox it is $499)

I just got back from Cozumel for 5 days with 9 dives for $800 including hotel & air.......

I will eventually make the trip to dive the Texas Clipper as well but I believe I will shop around some first. I am sure you could do better if you just booked the charter and hooked up you own hotel.

Just looked through the webpage of the operator the shop is using and they have the 3 tank Texas Clipper charter listed at $200. This sounds a little more reasonable......

DevilDiver, I previously looked at the Dive Op's page as well. I think you're right about booking my own hotel (I own a travel agency, so I might get discounts and commission on the stay as well). The All-In-One package offered by Tom's wasn't too far off-base.

Was supposed to go out this past weekend, but the dive was cancelled by the dive Op due to zero visibility at 100 fsw. :smiley5:

I probably won't get to dive it unti next year now...
