We are thinking of heading to Oklahoma this summer and was wondering the best place to dive. How is the vis this time of year for Tenkiller?

Tenkiller viz is around 6' in most places but gets up to 15' in few places(Thanks to all the rain we got this year).
Murray has decent viz w/ 15'-20'.
Broken Bow ...I haven't heard lately.

Dudes,

I'm heading down to Tulsa the weekend of 7/26 with my wife who has a conference. While my wife attends the conference, my dive buddies and I are going to Tenkiller. Problem we have is that we never been there. Can anybody give us a heads up on places to dive or not to dive?

Drop in and talk with Tim w/ Nautical Adventures. Here is a link to a map of some of the dive Sites and Nautical adventures. Nautical Adventures SCUBA Diving Services and Supplies (http://divetenkiller.com/map.htm)
There is a scuba park at The State park near the damn. Viz has only been 4'-6' around there.
Gene's Aqua Pro has a boat that goes over to Goat Island. I think he charges $5 a person to ride over there and from what I hear viz will be 12'-18' there. Here is a link to Gene's (Coolest old man I ever meet). Home (http://www.genesaquapro.com/index.htm)
Here are some links for Tenkiller.

TK isn't the only dive spot, it's size makes it the most appealing though. Murray has some good diving by the dam, but that about the only place.

Lake Elmer Thomas (by Lawton) usually has good vis (15-20 if the students arent in the water), but the area is pretty small, and parking goes fast on weekends.

As much as I love TK, from tulsa, TableRock is a better destination.

This year, all bets are off though. With all the rain this year, vis has been sucking from the reports I have read. (I'm sitting in Bagdad, so I can't give firsthand accounts). The dive park at TK is usually good for 10-15 vis above the thermal and gets better the deeper you go. Tim has dropped some nice stuff in the park, and is supposed to be dropping a SeaKnight helicopter (a biggun) this year.

that is really interesting, a helicopter...
My only dive in TK for far was last fall and vis in the scuba park was bad because of so many divers in the water. So bad in fact that I found the school bus by bumping into it.
There really were a whole lot of people kicking up stuff though, I'm going to check it out again in a couple months.

Oops, you're right. I forgot about that one. I haven't ever dove there myself, it's too far away. But I know a few Texans who like it alot.

Thanks for the information. Broken Bow? How far from Tulsa is it? I'm game for anything. This is really an opportunity that fell in our lap. The wife (one of those non-divers) just happen to be going to Tulsa for a conference and since she didn't want to drive alone suggested we (me and my dive buddies) go along and do a dive at Tenkiller. Some people she knows down there told her about Tenkiller and thought we would want to dive it. We never have, so it will be an adventure.

I can't give you a timeframe or distance, but the lake is in far south-eastern oklahoma. Probably twice the distance of TK, and you would basically have to drive past TK to get to it from Tulsa.

If you are into other outdoors stuff, there is a Bass-Pro just south of Tulsa (on the way to TK) on the east side of the highway. Easy on and off too.

Broken Bow Lake is about 3 hours from Tulsa. The vis has been about 10' to 12' down to 23' at the first thermocline where the vis gets to 2 to 3 feet and dark. May get better soon without much rain in July and August

Fire Diver,

First, Thank you for your service to our country.

Second, do you think that you will have a chance to dive while you are deployed? Where do they send you guys for R&R in theater? Dubai? Do you think that MWR would sponsor diving?

I doubt it. I know of 4 day passes to Dubai, but I have no clue who gets them or when or how. I am stuck out in the wild wild west, away from the unit I am assigned to. I just remember seeing a sheet about it on the office wall as I was whisked through in-process at Div HQ.

I don't know if MWR sponsors diving or not. It would be nice if they did.

I'm just planning on making up for lost time next year!

Thx for all the feedback - I never made it to Oklahoma (yet), but I do want to dive Oklahoma soon.
