I'd go to a store that sells them and play around with them, try them out, before buying one.

I just ordered a Garmin forerunner 305 with heart rate monitor a few days ago for $200 off Amazon. I should have it next week some time. I have quite a few friends who have used them and they all rave about the 305, except for it being a little on the large side. The only person I've talked to who has used the newer model forerunner 405 said it was difficult to read the tiny numbers while running and the touch bezel didn't work when he got sweaty or it was wet out. (he had the 305 before, so I think he was used to the larger screen on it)

I have been using a Timex Ironman speed and distance 100 gps watch. I bought it on a closeout for $70 with the watch and arm or hip mounted gps sensor a few years ago. It has worked fine until recently. A bad battery caused some corrosion to start inside the sensor and it will turn off intermittently. It takes 5 minutes to regain a signal, so the data gets skewed.
