My favourite family of fishes. I particularly like the Stonefish (the most poisonous fish in the world) and the Leaf Scorpion fish (Taenianotus triacanthus) here pictured. This critter has evolved to resemble a dead leaf and it supports this charade by rocking slowly from side ot side on its pectoral fins. They come in a variety of colours including pink, red, white and blue but this mottled variety is my favourite one. They eyes, as those of all the scorpion fish are like mirrors and really entrancing. The camouflage permits surprise attack on their prey. The lionfish are a member of this family. The leaf scorpion does not posess a sting unlike the majority of its cousins.

Some Scorpionfish and Stone fish stay stationary for so long that marine life begins to grow on them. Once in a while they choose to shed this cloak for some reason I do not understand. I observed thie Mozambique Scorpionfish (in Tonga) shedding its skin. See how clean it looks in the after shot compared to the before pic.

This is the Humpback or Devil Scorpionfish Scorpaenopsis diabolus. This particular individual has adopted a coat of corraline algae and blends in remarkably with the substratum. It is ready to seize anything that get close enough to that grumpy mouth.
