I saw this on SB and thought many of you might find it interesting.

Wow, that's a real shame! I hope they are able to succeed in keeping the bell in it's current spot.

I don't know... the story sounds fishy, and I'm not talking about the smell of the lake water. Who wants to raise it, what museum would it be going in, what would the significance of the bell mean off the bridge?

Somethings not adding up here.

I agree, it sounds odd. My best guess is that the person who placed the bell is afraid to make much noise about it because (as they mentioned) they fear some trouble form the corps of engineers.
Perhaps someone found the bell down there and, not knowing the story, thinks the bell is an original part of the bridge or somesuch, and wants to bring it up.
Maybe just getting the real story out will let those wanting to raise the bell see that they really have no reason to go get it.

Either way, I would hate to see a memorial to this man be removed. It was truly a tragic accident that took his life and I know he brought a lot to the Nebraska dive community.

Kimberling Bridge then:

and now:

If the Corp of non Engineers is the problem then perhaps they need to go down to New Orleans and build some levees and leave the bell alone and the person who put it there as a memorial. What could it possibly harm, it is part of the dive now--leave it alone.

I know, why would they stick their nose in business that really does not involve them.
