Just started doing uw photog and noticed if I close my eyes, or at least don't stare directly at the fish they stay put longer, letting me get in closer for a shot. Any experience like this?

Any experience using the colored or mirrored masks?

Fish seem to know when they are being stalked. I find that if you camp close they may come to you for the shot. But if you follow they will mostly exit the area quickly.

I prefer to be able to see a divers eyes in case of issues and communication.

Fish will avoid a diver or be wary if you look directly at them. You can try to slowly approach from a side angle or keep your camera in front of your face to shield your eyes while lining up your options for the shot.
