Yes, we all know that it's the person behind the camera to a large extent, however admit it... you are a gear junkie, and the first question people often ask about a photo is what did you use. Ironic, as it's likely the least important thing one should ask!smileys/smiley36.gif

So post your gear setup guys and gals! I'll start.

Some day maybe I'll add a strobe, but I don't dive enough to warrant it for now.

I have the Canon A620 with Canon's housing. How easy is the Inon D2000 to hook up? Are you using the optical cable with it. Does it work with your camera's flash?

I'm pretty lost with the whole notion of strobes but want to get one that will be compatible with my camera and will be VERY easy to use.

The Inon D2000 was really simple to hook up. It's designed to use TTL with an optical sync cable that reads the flash output of your internal flash. I haven't even got the rig underwater but above water the flash seems to be evaluating perfectly. Photo is definitely a hobby of mine and I took some test shots in some challenging situations where the flash would need to be metering correctly for the shot to turn out and it did. I'll have it wet this weekend hopefully and can report more then. Here's the setup I went with.

You might give ST a ring and see if this is something they an put together for you. I know they sell sea and sea but according to several on ScubaBoard the Inon seems to work better with the canon a series.
I never thought to ask them before I ordered and kinda wish I had. Although I had no problems with divervision they are overseas and you risk having to pay duties if customs so chooses to assess them to you (which they are actually supposed to do but didn't to me).

Thanks for the rapid reply -- Looks easy enough but I'm sure you'll fill me in on the details after you get it wet. Did the diffuser tape or whatever that thing is called come with your package?
<DIV>Also, do you have weight it all? And if so, how much? Let me know after you get it weight. </DIV>

<DIV>I'm going to Roatan in November so I've got lots of time to explore my options but I've been leaning towards this strobe. </DIV>

Sioux,

Before you buy, check out the Sea &amp; Sea YS-110. It is a brighter light, has a larger beam, built in modeling light, and has built in the ability to remote sense your flash, use a fiber optic cable, or direct cable to a DSLR type camera, so if you ever upgrade your camera, this strobe won't need to be replaced.

ST carries them and can get you the best price around.

Have fun in Roatan! Still my favorite place to dive!

Fantasea CP-6 Pro housing
Xlarge tray w Fantasea Nano Coolflash(works awesomely, by the way)
and I had the dual arms with focusing light(which is now somewhere on bouy #3 at Stetson Bank-or recovered and not returned)

I just recently purchased the Nikon WP-CP3 housing so I can access the manual white balance and also the dial. It was hard to decide to do pics or video prior to diving. I had also had a problem with fantasea housing as there was no way to access the power button according to fantasea(and there was no button over the power either) as a safety function. Well that was before knowing that if you hold the image review button on many of the coolpix for 3 seconds, camera comes on and hit it again, and it gives you the ability to shoot. I wish I had found out about it sooner, it would have made things over the last year much easier.

I still have and occasionally shot with a Nikonos V which was perhaps the best underwater film camera ever made. It was small, light, flexible and took great pictures. However, it did have some drawbacks like annual service ($125+) and the limitations of just 36 shots per dive.

I switched over to an Olympus C-8080 about two years ago. The C-8080 is a great picture taker but suffers in the shutter lag category. I use it in an Ikelite housing with a Ike DS-125 strobe.

My thoughts now are on the purchase on a new camera. Possibly the new Canon G9 or Nikon P5100. Both of these look great on paper and should compliment my DS-125 strobe nicely. I just need to get my hands on them first and see if they live up to their specs and also check the lens quality to see if they are worthy !!!

I used a Olympus C-7070 before going to DSLR. It is a big step forward from shoot compact. Shoot a Nikon D80 for a few months now I am kicking myself why I didnt got DSLR sooner. I can see the extra quality it has with using better lenses.

But it does come down to money.

Aussie brings up a great point. Lens quality is a key factor regardless of the brand or price of the camera you shoot with. I get a little frustrated with the shutter lag on my C-8080 but I think the picture clarity will match any DSLR on the market.

My rig is getting long in the tooth and starting to fall apart like me! Two years ago the strobe quit in the middle of a trip to Cozumel. Ike updated and rebuilt it. Last year on a trip to the Turks & Caicos I lost my Inon wide angle lens. This year the night we got to Roatan the clamp on my housing broke. It's being held together by super glue and prayers.

With every event I look at the current crop of P&S and DSLRs. I'd really like to go DSLR, but can't get past the need to be able switch from CFWA to super macro during a dive. I know if I would be rigged for macro the never before seen whale shark would swim by or if rigged for wide angle I'd see that 1/4" thing that I'd been waiting for. I realize that almost anything made now has less focus and shutter lag than the 5050 but none of the P&S's I've looked at have as many features. I've used my wife's F810 but hate the battery life and the lack of a super macro mode and the flash door closing all the time drives me crazy. I guess I'll have to find a broken PT-15 or fork out the bucks for one on Ebay.

I never saw such setups...one guy had some new Nikon or maybe a Cannon that I think was 16 million pixel.....and I think he said his set up was around 10k plus....I met at least 8 people who shot in Raw....There must of been 15 to 20 Cameras as big or bigger than Allison's set up....I walked out of the Camera room with my Sony point and shoot tucked under a towel:smiley19:

Well, don't you worry. There have been plenty of blue ribbons given to people shooting with small point and shoot cameras. After having used them myself, and having to deal with many challenges they offer, I will never forget my roots. Heck, our fancy DSLR rigs just show that we are too lazy to deal with that anymore. These cameras almost guarantee a decent picture. Not nearly the challenge of a P&S IMHO.

BTW, at the Kasawari Lodge in Lembeh, a friend of ours took her P&S camera and proudly displayed it among the Nikon and Canon rigs. We took a picture of it before she snuck it back to the room.

Allison do you take that set up when you dive in currents? I have only seen a couple of those in Palau in all my years going there...never saw one in the Tuamotu's in Tahiti....Mostly cameras like mine. Usually the only time I see those big set ups used in Palau is usually when we do wall diving or something like the Coral garden. Both times I have been to Indonesia or Malaysia...the big Cameras are out.

To those with P&S - no need to hide your system. Just know your cameras strengths and limitations. If I'm shooting macro and a whale shark comes by, well simply, I'm screwed and would wish for your P&S (sometimes I even keep one in a BCD pocket). Also, they're easy and don't require much maintenance.

Nikkor 105mm macro & woody diopter
Sigma 10-20mm wide angle zoom
Ports/Zoom gear/focus gear for each lens
2 Sea & Sea YS-110 strobes
Epoque strobe flex arms (I've modified these to make them longer and added foam with a wire inside to make them a bit stonger and a little buoyant)
FixLight LED Light (used on night dives as addl focusing/primary light)

I'm looking forward to upgrading to D300... sometime... $2k camera body cost (and you DO need a backup body) + Nexus body (will probably be in the $3,500 range) makes another $7,500 investment tough, especially when I also want a rebreather.

I've seriously considered going to a DSLR setup but I just can past the size of those rigs. I've decided to stick to my old faithful little workhorse P&S rig....

Oly C-5050, PT-015 housing, Inon D180 strobe, S&S WA lens, INON165 macrox2, Fantasea focusing light. I've taken some great shots with this rig but my diving has turned a corner and I no longer have to get every photo possible. I'm enjoying just diving more and more but also don't want to miss those 'one of' or surprise opportunity shots. So this past October I even went backwards and 'downgraded' to a much smaller Oly Stylus 740, Oly PT34 housing. I love the size of it, it's great for those tight shots I've always had to skip because the 5050 rig was too big. Although I lost the RAW capabilities, I don't do alot of editing anyway so PS CS2 can do whatever I need to JPG shots.

It sure was nice in October to get on the plane with nothing but a very small, half empty carry on backpack!

Don't own under watter equipt yet but depending on how busness goes this year. My dream is to get a Nikon D3 with houseing and strobes. For those of you out there that don't know they re designed the chips and the low light capability is signifigantly better as well as the color depth.

Hi Hilloboy
neat setup the seatool housing looks so compact . your rig looks smaller than some ikelite P/S systems .
if i went DSLR underwater i think i would like a seatool housing for the d200, or d300 and inon strobes , do you find the fibre optic firing if strobes works ok and how does the sttl work ? . the floats on the arms looks like a good idea also .

Regards
Matt

Matt,
I shoot with the strobes manually but the sttl is suppose to work really well.

Since the housing is so compact, it have very little air space making the setup very negative buoyant. My homemade float (I actually use 4 pieces now) make the setup just slight negatively buoyant. Unfortunately, it is made from a pool noodle and if taken down deep, the material will crush, losing its buoyancy.

Since I have only been diving shallow (35 feet), the material has held up well. 4th Generation Designs , 4gdphoto.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=11, makes a high quality float that will last at depth.
