so a guy in my office started growing a stache. I mention to him that they are so 20th century. He replies that the 80's porn star mustaches are coming back. Did I miss an issue of GQ?

I never had a mustache when I was a porn star. Of course I was a diver back then also. Mask seal is just to difficult with a stache.

I've had a mustache for 35 years. I was in Bonaire diving last week and shaved it because my mask just kept leaking. I'm already starting to grow it back. My upper lip just looks funny necked.

I usually trim mine up a little before I dive, but I have had a mustache for a long time as well. When I have shaved it off, folks don't recognize me.

For cold weather diving, I like to grow my beard in as it definitely keeps my face a little warmer.

Mine doesn't give me any problems diving. Although I don't like the gray coming in.

The answer to a 'stache while diving is a purge valve. I have no issues with mine, I just exhale through my nose once in a while.. my mask doesn't fog up either.
I know purge valves were crap years ago, but this is 2008, they are made much better!
I don't know about the porn star look.. maybe post in women's forum and ask if they think it's sexy.. but instead of porn star say "Quigley Down Under look?

Depends entirely on the face it is on whether or not it is sexy. And oh boy does texture matter!

That's what keeps me from growing one again. I had one for 20 some odd years and shaved it off one day on a whim. I doubt gray in my mustache would help much in my ongoing denial over aging.

Seriously considering shaving mine. I'm actually developing a gray stripe directly under my nose. Kinda like a reverse hitler:smiley5:

My first dozen or so dives I didn't want to risk it so I shaved. Since then I have just trimmed it away from under my nose a little bit. I did add a disposable razor into my save a dive kit just incase I found that my mask was not cooperating on a certain day.

one thing worse than a bad mustache on a guy.... is a bad mustache on a women.......

As long as I keep mine trimmed...no problem with mask seal. But if I forget, plenty of mask clearing going on.

I've started growing a beard and mustache and this weekend was my first time in the water with it. 5 dives, 2 of those were good with little leakage. One was so bad that in 5 seconds the water level would go past my eyes, talk about purging the mask. It was constantly leaking and to be honest if that was my only experience I'd shave it back off in the blink of an eye. The 2 good dives tell me that there is a way it can work, just got to figure what I did different on those two dives.

Guys. Man Forum. Nothing to do with diving or masks.
We all know mustaches have been "out" for the last couple of decades except for the Mr. Money Bags in the Monopoly game, or if you are Tom Selleck or Sam Elliot.
Even Harry Reams shaved his. http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMjE4MTY5NDA0N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwMDkyMjIz._V1._ CR0,0,264,264_SS90_.jpg (http://www.imdb.com/rg/photos-name/summary/media/rm426547712/nm0715857)

My question was re: men's fashion.

I've had stache for 30+ years. I've threatened to shave it off but my wife asked me to keep it. I'd really like to see what I would look like without it. I don't really have a problem with water in my mask, but when I do I just practice clearing it!I

She want's you to keep it because women find them unattractive. Make you look like the Monopoly guy after 30 years.

Shave it. Get some hand.

Only reason I ever shave my 'stache is for band season (and then only because it's required).

I have had a fairly thick mustache most of my life. I use a mask with a purge valve and it works very well. For big dive trips (more than a couple of days) I shave my mustache. For smaller dive trips, I don't shave it, I just put a little silicone on it to seal it. Works great, lasts a long time.

If you do decide to shave it, make sure and put lots of sun screen on it and make sure the sunscreen is the baby kind that won't irritate your eyes.

Don't forget to meticulously clean all the sunscreen off your mask after diving as it may ruin the mask skirt. Nothing like having a nice clean little skirt over your mustache.

Screw "fashion". They ain't no good for diving and this is a diving forum! Mkay? :smilie39:
I shaved mine off and never looked back. Of course, back when I was a porn star I didn't dive. I couldn't afford diving because I didn't make any money as a porn star. Ironic? Probably.

OK, I'm new at this and my hubby's mask always leaks because of his mustache. We've tried vaseline (on the mustache!!!!) LOL but still it leaks.
So what is a soul patch and does it really work?

On a man or a woman?

On a man, it is a little patch under the bottom lip on the chin. On a woman?... well...Has nothing to do with a mask.

Had the mustache form 16 to 40 to look older and more mature etc. etc.(also a beard for about 12 years during that span) . Shaved the mustache at 40 to look younger and help prevent people from thinking my new babies were my grandkids.
