Well, not exactly sure where to put this so the regional area seems to be right.
02/16/2009; Lands end on bailey's island, maine. water temp was around 34f and the air temp was hoovering around 32/33. Went down to about 35 ft. with medium tidal currents, the visibilty was about 50 ft or so. all in all, a good dive. :smiley20:

Holy crap... I won't even go outside when it hits 34f unless it is an emergency. I have respect for you cold water divers... you have to really love diving to jump into something that cold drysuit or not.

ha ha straegen, drysuit? whats a drysuit, I was wearing long undies, lycra bodysuit and a 5mm wetsuit.

You must be kidding. That is not warm enough for surface conditions much less getting wet.

i'm just a broke college student, can't afford a drysuit, so i make do with what i have, thankfully the past couple of days has been above freezing so there was no ice.

Sounds like some nice diving to me... of course, I also dove wet in Maine when I was in college, so I'm predisposed to being able to appreciate that sort of thing. Cold is all relative... if you thing 60 degree air temps are chilly, 35 is COLD. If you're accustomed to thinking -5 is chilly, 35 is, literally, a day at the beach.

I never dove Bailey's... what were some of the highlights? What was the bottom like? Any interesting critters?

not really any interesting critters, but the shoreline looked pretty awesome to me, it has a pretty craggy shoreline around the islands with coves and nice rock formations.

To cold for the fish, I suppose. :)

I did my AOW checkouts in March (1990) off MDI, and we didn't see much but moon snails and urchins at that time of year. I wondered if it was just the sandy bottom, but I suspected the temps factored in quite a bit.

I did my OW cert dives off of Lands End, so I know that site pretty well. When I was there the vis was more like 10 or 15, but that was midsummer.

Are you from around that area of Maine?
