I saw on Discovery Channel that it was identified as French when the ROV entered the engine room and confirmed it had two cruising speeds. Forward and fast reverse.

Actually, the French Naval Flag until the Revolution was white. (No, seriously, it was). That was 110+ years before the Danton was sunk though.

during the 18th century the French (for lack of a better word) battle flag was white." the flag of surrender was red here's a picture:
