Can anyone comment on Pearl? Unfortunately, my LDS does AOW out there, and it's a heck of a long way from Chicago... Does anyone do training in Lake Michigan?

Some shops and clubs do AOW on Lake Michigan. BOW is almost always at Haigh or Pearl. Pearl isn't really that far, depending on where in the city you are.

<DIV>Pearl is fun to dive. The beach entry is easy. The vis (compared to Haigh) leaves something to be desired. The sites are pretty cool, though....from the Submarine to the cabin cruiser to the airplane...</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Saw some pretty ginormous northerns in there last year, too...</DIV>

Is this a real sub or a made up one?

I haven't been to Pearl Lake since either '79 or '80...very fond memories of a weekend spent diving with a bunch of college friends who had NO money...ah the days of "if we pool our money we can get two tanks filled and draw straws for who gets to dive". smileys/smiley36.gif

<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Well, it's not imaginary, if that's what you're asking... :D</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>I believe it was a functioning sub, some form of training vessel or some such, but I can't find anything online to support or debunkthat...</DIV>

Anyone know the current conditions? Trying to decide where to go this weekend. Looking at Pearl or Haigh.

The conditions at pearl at the moment are pretty decent. was there alst weekend with around 68 degrees at around 25 feet where most of the atractions are. The sub is real. it's a small 2 man sub about 25 feet long or so.

Also if you plan on diving at pearl, Show up early and get in the water before all of the OW students so you don't get silted out.

How deep is Pearl Lake and does it really get that busy? I mean is it busier than places like Table Rock lake might be?

the deepest you can go in pearl is between 75 and 80 in the deep hole depending on the water level of the lake. The only thing down in the deep hole is a few training platforms. Typically if you go deeper than 45-50 feet theres nothing but fish poo and rocks to look at. Pearl gets busy with OW classes but it is easy for a small group to pull up and sneak in next to a class. Also theres a very nice swimming area and a restaurant/bar with a camping area.

Even though pearl lake can be a fun day, if your going to make the drive to northern IL all the way from MO I'd suggest skiping the quarries and trying to get booked on a charter on lake michigan.

Actually I plan on that once I get advanced Nitrox and Deco done. There's stuff there I want to see.

theres some good stuff deep, but theres plenty of really nice wrecks within the recreational limits as well.

Pearl Lake is where we go when we just need a diving fix. Great spot for learning. Easy access, $20 entry fee. lots of bluegill, walleye, bass. The airplanes are full of baby fish. Thermocline is about 25' and going early works really well. We go during the week and have the place to ourselves....

Going up for 2 days of diving over Labor Day weekend. Dove one day, the last day of the 2006 season for them. Little chilly in October but managable. I hear the Cheeseburger in the restruant is a "must do" while you're there. Will let you know in a couple weeks

very good burgers. if the restaurant isnt open go to the bar and order the snack burgers, not quite as big but still very good.
