I recently downloaded Gimp so I could play around with some test photos using the CHDK hack for Canon cameras. Iíve only touched the surface of the Gimp manual but, after about 2-3 minutes of poking around with save, color, saturation etc. It shuts down (4 times so far) with a message that Gimp has stopped working and is shutting down.

Before I throw in the towel, Iím wondering if Gimp is compatible with Vista or is there something else I should do (short of upgrading to Windows super duper & photoshop mega$)?

Here are some details:

Computer: Inspiron 1316
2.13 Ghz
1 G RAM memory

OS: Windows Vista Home Edition
(32 Bit)

Gimp 2.6

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Not sure but I would check the GIMP site first, I am sure they would have compatibility info posted somewhere.....

Let us know what you find.

Picasa 3---it's free, works with RAW format, and it's quick. (http://picasa.google.com/)
Did I say it's free?

cheers

EDIT: Works with any flavor of windows.

Thanks for the suggestion to try picasa. I've downloaded v3 & get a "not a valid file" when I try to upload the .CRW file. I must be missing something.

It just says it works with Windows but I suspect there is some issue with Vista Home Edition. I'll try another DL.

Seems that it is a known issue with Gimp when it queries fonts in Vista. From what I've read, after it shuts down, re-open and try it again and eventually it will return to normal, and the next time you open it, since the fonts are cached, it won't hang like that.

I also found this about an SVG.exe crash: Everything void: Gimp on Vista: svg.exe has stopped working (http://tuxvoid.********.com/2008/04/gimp-on-vista-svgexe-has-stopped.html)

Hope this helps.

I use it on my laptop when we travel(vista home prem). Question, did you unlock your sd card before you tried to IMPORT the .crw file?

cheers

Gimp works fine for me on vista. I'm using a notebook and vista 32-bit by the way.

I followed the steps for the SVH crash. Thanks very much for that link. I thought is was going to solve the problem but, a few minutes after opening Gimp & adjusting an image, the program stopped working.

JCAT,
When I try to upload the file from the card I get the "not a valid file" message with it both locked and unlocked.

You could try running it in XP compatibility mode.

Find the Gimp executable, right click, select properties, click the 2nd tab.

Found that & selected the xp button. Thanks for responding diversteve. If that doesn't work, I'll get a bigger hammer!

Diversteve,

Maybe I shouldn't speak too soon, but Gimp is running for several hours without a problem. You are a genius! Thanks for your help!

My first impression with gimp is even though I have a lot to learn, it is more than adequate for me.

Thanks to all of you that responded to my call for help. I hope I can return the favor some day.

I have a lot to learn about Gimp but, my first impression is that it will be much more than adequate for me.

I wanted to provide a quick update on using Gimp with Visa. As I stated in the above post, (and I see that I posted twice, sorry about that) it is more than adequate for me. I'm not too deep into manipulating images, but a few that were over/under exposed were saved from the trash bin. The more I use it, the more impressive it is. I've only scratched the surface, but I'll be using Gimp for all of my future digital processing

I finally got Picasa v3.0 to open the CDW files and I really like how easy it is to organize images with Picasa.

I also downloaded a trial package of aperture (on an ibook) and would really like to use it, but the price of Gimp and Picasa ($0.00) is hard to beat.

I've quickly gone from being totally and blissfully ignorant about processing digital images to realizing how much I have to learn.

What was the issue with the .crw files in Picasa? What was the fix?

I'm not certain JKCAT. I was using an older version of Picasa and installed 3.0 (thanks again for that suggestion) but I didn't see a change. It still gave a message that the .CRW file was not a valid file. I returned to working with gimp and later in the day went back to Picasa which then recognized the raw files so I was able to download them. I blame it all on microsoft !:smiley36:

I use gimp of my vista 32bit and every now and then I get issues. I just close it out then restart the program. It works (most of the time) and can't beat the price of free.

I never have problems running gimp on vista. But then I don't work on any one file for extended periods of time.
